Spring 2018 Jewelry Trends

If you know One Strange Bird, you know we LOVE jewelry.  We are known for our locally made, unique jewelry in our Chicago store.  Owner Nicole Northway started in 2009 as a jewelry designer making feather earrings on Etsy!  We have spotted some fun trends for 2018 and have our version in store and on-line for you.  Freshen up your look for Spring with our affordable and adorable jewelry.

1. Minimal Geo

Delicate geometric designs in golds and rose golds are still perfectly on trend in 2018.  This year, we see the trend with pops of pave diamonds and CZ.  We love the layered look and think mixing metals is key!  Rose gold is still all the rage.  Mix it with gold for a fresh interpretation of the trend.

2. Mix and Match Studs

This works really well for us since we are always loosing one of our studs!!!  Pair a star stud with a moon or a gemstone stud with a metallic.  The possibilities are endless and you won't feel as badly about your "orphan" jewelry collection collecting dust on your dresser.

3. Tropical Vibes

Dana_Email_3.jpg

This spring and summer, the tropical trend is still on point!  Tropical leaf motifs, Monstera Madness, Pineapples, and more abound in Spring Fashion Trends.  We love feeling like we're on "vaccay all day" when we wear these fun charms.  Even though we are still getting snow in March here in Chicago, we can dream of coconuts and sunburns in a tropical paradise.

July 4th Outfit

We're always on the look out for a good holiday-themed get up! Since July 4th is just around the corner, we put together a couple of our favorite looks. What will you wear?

We always love a good summer dress. Pair this adorable number from Brooklyn Industries with a bright blue statement necklace (One Strange Bird, $26) that draws attention to the unique neckline. Mix patterns successfully with a neutral-colored woven clutch (One Strange Bird, $42), perfect for any summer BBQ or patio party. Pair with sandals to dress down or heels to dress up!

Heading to the beach or somewhere low-key? Try a patterned crop-top and striped waders! Mixing patterns is all about matching colors and making sure they are different enough to stand out from each other. Try lightweight accessories, like these filagree earrings (One Strange Bird, $15), understated gem pendant necklace (One Strange Bird, $27), and sunglasses (One Strange Bird, $15). Match with a bright red fringe bag (One Strange Bird, $32) for a festive touch!

Happy celebrating!

5 Spring Fashion Trends You Need to Know

We are SO excited for spring! Fresh colors, fun accents, flowy skirts and scarves are just around the corner. Update your wardrobe just in time for patio season with these trends to help you shop.

DELICATE GOLD SPARKLES

_MG_2498.jpg

Simple, classic styles get a fun flair of geometric accents and sparkle this season. Choose pieces with unique shapes, personalized letters, and thin bands and chains for a delicate look that pairs with all outfits.

PRETTY PASTELS

It's no surprise that spring shopping means pastels! Add a little edge to the softness by mixing in neon colors with a traditional pastel palette.

TASSELS

Beautiful yarns and threads are popping up everywhere! Bracelets, necklaces, and earrings with softly textured threads add a unique juxtaposition to the hard stones and metals.

BRIGHT STATEMENT PIECES

Mix up that all-black work wardrobe with some fun pops of color that still say professional. Add a bright yellow clutch or saturated statement necklace to add flair to any monochromatic ensemble.

ONE-OF-A-KIND

One-of-a-kind pieces are always in style, but even more so this season we see handmade and locally made items that are especially unique. We love statement pieces designed by local artists both as gifts and as an update to your new spring wardrobe.

Michelle Starbuck, a featured local designer, has created these signature pieces especially for our VIP Event on March 30. Browse her beautiful creations and more during the event. We will have more featured local products, appetizers and sangria, and free mini-classes of jewelry design or watercolor painting! Register here for the event. We hope to see you there!

OSB's Scarf Tips & Tricks

As they say, there is more than one way to bake a cake, more than one way to shear a sheep and more than one way to tie a scarf. While scarves are always an option no matter the season, this fall's incarnations are a touch more playful than years past - think the bigger the better and bright colors galore. Check out a few of our favorite ways to tie a scarf with video tutorials for added instruction!

Classic Wrap and Knot

Image via Laura Wears... Probably one of the simplest scarf styles around, the classic wrap and knot is as easy as it is versatile. Best for longer lengths, just wrap around your neck one or two times - depending on desired bulkiness - and knot the remaining tails. Go looser for a more casual, cozy vibe and tighter for a crisp finish.

Woven Scarf Knot

Image via That's Your Gold For a fashion forward meets utilitarian vibe, the woven scarf knot is just right for those who want the best of both worlds. This knot keeps the tails close and out of your way, whether grocery shopping or chasing little ones at the park. Best when bundled over a pullover or an open cardigan, this look translates from day to night with a snap of your fingers. Check out this handy tutorial from Kayley Anne of That's Your Gold - previously known as Sidewalk Ready - to get the hang of this twisty, curvy knot combo.

The Half JAL

Image via Vogue For a more delicate take on the season's scarf fad, think silk. Though this style, dubbed the Half JAL by fashion creative, Aî Birh, works best with thinner fabrics, this high-necked tie can also be accomplished with any square scarf. Either way, this look screams high fashion no matter how you slice it. Birh also gives step by step directions for three alternative scarf ties, shown here .

The Uptown Wrap

Image via Express-O With a slinky name to match, the Uptown Wrap combines a few of our favorite things: modern elegance, comfort and versatility. This cozy chic style when paired with a monochromatic base is dressed up and ready to go for an art show downtown or Friday night drinks. For a more casual, lazy Sunday get-up add cuffed boyfriend jeans and a flannel. Easy enough to style, just wrap and go, the Uptown Wrap will have you traipsing through the fall leaves and city streets in no time.

The Side Hankerchief

Image via Stylish Petite    Not only is the blanket scarf a big YES this season but a flannel pattern adds just the right amount of back to school prep for any ensemble. Annie of Stylish Petite rocks her blanket scarf tied as a side hankerchief and we love how the proportions and coverage on top balance her exposed stems and playful sweater dress. Kudos for showing off the adorable baby bump too!

Bright and Tight Neckerchiefs

Image via The Fashion Eaters Neckerchiefs are everywhere this season and we could not be happier. Contrast with a bright pop of color for a trendy approach or dress up office daywear with a simple neutral tone. Add a silky neckerchief to a tote's handle for an unexpected flourish or tie around you wrist to up your street style game. This video from Wow How shows quite a few ways to get into the neckerchief game but don't be frustrated if you don't get the pull-though knot on the first try.  (I sure didn't!)

Full-on Poncho

Image via Hello Fashion Alright, alright! Cool your jets. We know ponchos are not technically scarves but these redheaded stepsisters are equally as fun and fall-friendly as their scarfy counterparts. Think of them as blanket scarves with even less stress. Ponchos add texture, another warm layer and breezy confidence to any look. Just add skinny jeans, ankle booties and you are ready for an afternoon picking apples or drinking lattes at a coffeeshop. Sounds good to us!
