Style Plus Curves

We Love Amber from Style Plus Curves.  I first met her at a fashion event at Macy's when we were doing a DIY Table and was blown away with her kindness.  She also modeled for our very first wholesale catalog. Her style is always unique and inspiring. Check out her blog and Instagram page for adorable styled looks!

Glossed and Found is a Chicago Staple.  I had the honor of meeting Graham a couple of years back on small business Saturday at the shop. He is kind and creative and his blog reflects that! Check out G and F for unique spins on a variety of subjects.  Their photographs, subject matter and writing is super unique and brings a fresh voice to the blog world.

Laurie and her adorable dog Betty are so kind!  I meet Laurie because she is friends with one of my favorite designers, Michelle Starbuck! Check out Laurie's blog to learn about beauty tips and tricks and the latest and greatest products out there.  Here photographs are gorgeous and she has a very focused style and voice.

Johanna is a super fashionable, working mom of two. Seriously, I DO NOT know how she does it!  Her blog is full of beautifully composed photographs in fun, bold places in the city.  Follow along for a great mix of color, beauty, and style.

DIY Craft Pumpkins

Chalk Painted Pumpkins

If you know One Strange Bird, you know we LOVE fall around here.  I personally love the cooler weather and the shifting of the season.  As we wave goodbye to the fun energy of the summer, we turn slightly inward during the cooler months at the end of the year.  My family and I just recently moved into our first single family home in Chicago's Portage Park and I have just loved all the extra space to decorate.  We are on a tight budget with baby now, so I oftentimes try to think of budget friendly DIY projects.  My favorite place to hunt for ideas is the Dollar Tree and there are no shortage of Dollar Stores in our neighborhood!

My little baby, Emerson and I found some fun foam pumpkins and gold thumbtacks and got this cute idea.  I just painted the foam pumpkins with two coats of chalk paint and let them dry overnight.  The next day, I pushed the little thumbtacks in a fun pattern.  It was super easy and only three dollars!  You can't beat that.

Gold Foil Pumpkins

We can't get enough of the gold trend!  To make these complementary white and gold pumpkins, I used gold leaf paper and Mod Podge.  It is super easy!  Just brush on the Mod Podge and apply the gold leaf.  I like to break the gold leaf off so it has a more rustic ascetic.  I used real white mini pumpkins we picked up at the pumpkin farm during my birthday celebration!

To finish out our display, I used some of my highly coveted mild glass collection as containers for the pumpkins. The contrasting colors and heights add a fun variety to the display. Stay tuned for more halloween DIY ideas!

Happy Crafting,

Fall Fashion Trends

If you know anything about us here at One Strange Bird, you'll know we're OBSESSED with fall. Pumpkins, sweaters, the colors, everything about this season makes us squeal. Even more so are this year's fall fashion trends! Let's get down to our favorites!

Jewel-toned colors have always been popular for fall, but this season mustard especially is everywhere. Try a gorgeous mustard yellow skirt or blouse for some pep in your step, or a clutch or handbag for a subtle pop of color. "Spicy mustard" seen above is one of Pantone's top fall colors. (Small zippered clutches $28 at One Strange Bird.)

Fall Florals

Florals? For fall? YES! Instead of the springy, pastel-type florals you see earlier in the year, try a deeper-toned print or a smaller pattern. Think colors like classic black, dusty blue, wine, or a sienna clay.  We L.O.V.E. Anna's look seen here from A Lily Love Affair. The subtle floral print and belted waist are spot on with her burgundy cross-body bag.

Ahhh, the days of chokers are here again! We remember making our own as teens with a bit ribbon or lace from Joann fabrics. While we're always up for a good DIY project, we love these statement chokers with a bit more sass.

Try going for different and unique textures in the leather or lace, and remember - a pop of bling goes a long way. Chokers are great to wear with boat-necked or higher-neck blouses. Stick to lighter colors for a more subtle approach, or vamp it up with thick lace for a night out. Throw on a red lip, and you'll be queen of the dance floor. (Statement chokers $10-20 at One Strange Bird.)

Midi Skirt

Midi skirts will be everywhere this season. From the full and fun A-line skirt to a fitted pencil skirt, you can't go wrong with this classic look. This one I found at a vintage store! I paired it with a deep purple top for a fun pop of color and shorter boots to accent the bottom hem.

Speaking of things we're obsessed with, fringe is back in a big way! Go full-on fringe with a crossbody bag, or try a tassel accent for a simple approach. Extra bonus points if you're able to add in metallic accents, like a studded bag. We love these funky earrings with metallic chain fringe, seen below. (Earrings, $15, woven clutches $32 at One Strange Bird.)
